As an accountant I saw it year after year. Small business owners would come in to get their tax returns done and we would chat about how their year had gone. We would go over their financial information and they would all tell me how busy, tired, stressed out, burnt out and frustrated they were because there was too much to do and not enough hours in the day to do it all.

I knew as they walked out the door that they would be back the next year with the exact same results. Year after year they worked, making the same or less as they would at a job, while working at least twice as hard while also taking on all the risks of being self-employed. They weren’t able to take the vacations they wanted to with their family, send their kids to the schools of their choice, couldn’t provide proper health care or the proper nutrition in some cases.

Their own health and relationships suffered, sometimes ending in divorce, from the stress of doing the same thing year after year while never achieving the results they wanted. Whether they had ever enjoyed what they were doing wasn’t clear anymore as the lack of results and the stress of the day to day struggle had taken all the joy from their lives.
